Hazardous Substance Injury: Case classification
Hazardous Substance Injuries can optionally be notified in EpiSurv but MUST be formally reported to Massey University Hazardous Substances Disease and Injury Reporting Tool (HSDIRT).
In New Zealand, any injury or disease caused by hazardous substances must be notified to the Medical Officer of Health. For further information on notifying hazardous substances injury, please refer to Massey University’s HSDIRT Resources for health professionals page.
Under investigation - A case that has been notified but information is not yet available to classify it as probable, confirmed or not a case.
Probable - A clinically compatible injury where the exposure is linked to a confirmed source and not otherwise explained by other causes.
Confirmed - A probable case that is confirmed by the diagnosing medical practitioner or laboratory confirmed.
Not a case - A case that has been investigated and subsequently has been shown not to meet the case definition.
